Solar Farm Power Quality Optimization in Dubai

CHITEK Project Team

A 50MW solar installation in Dubai faced significant power quality challenges, including poor power factor and harmonic distortion from inverters. CHITEK's SVG solution delivered transformative results.

Project Highlights

50MW
Capacity
0.85→0.99
Power Factor
15%
Loss Reduction
$180K
Annual Savings

The Challenge

Solar photovoltaic systems generate significant harmonic currents through their inverters. At the Dubai installation, the combined effect of multiple inverters created:

  • Power factor as low as 0.85 during peak generation
  • THD levels exceeding 8% at the point of common coupling
  • Voltage fluctuations affecting sensitive grid equipment
  • Potential penalties from the utility company

The Solution

CHITEK deployed a comprehensive power quality solution consisting of:

  • 4 × CHITEK SVG-300 Static Var Generators for reactive power compensation
  • 2 × CHITEK AHF-200 Active Harmonic Filters for harmonic mitigation
  • Integrated monitoring system for real-time power quality tracking

Results

Within weeks of installation, the facility achieved:

  • Power factor improved from 0.85 to 0.99
  • THD reduced from 8% to below 3%
  • Elimination of utility penalty charges
  • Annual energy savings of approximately $180,000
